Othello, By William Shakespeare - 1518 Words

In William Shakespeare’s Othello, the newlywed couple was truly and madly in love at the time they’re married the couple were unable to consummate the marriage. Perhaps it is because there were a few moments for the pair to be alone together. However when a chance did arrive for the couple to finally have a â€Å"honeymoon†, some unfortunate event would happen and the immediate moment was lost. It is for this reason of this unconsummated marriage that Desdemona’s virginity is a key factor in the fall of their marriage. M. D. Faber states that â€Å"Then too, there is nonstrousness in the fact that Desdemona is placed in the posture of the sinful mortal when she is in reality not only innocent but the one character in the play who is from an†¦show more content†¦While it could be that they were able to â€Å"seal the deal† before they showed up, Othello explains to the court that he has done nothing but marry Desdomona. When he states, â₠¬Å"It is most true; true, I have married her. The very head and front of my offending / Hath this extent, no more.† (1.3.79-82). By this statement it’s for certain that they have not completed the journey to fully become man and wife. During the meeting with the court, it is decided that Othello will leave for Cyprus. He is bold, and requests to the court if his bride may accompany him there. To attribute that Desdemona will not agitate him from his responsibilities he makes a claim that his marriage is one of companion rather than passion. By voicing this statement, it shows that consummating the marriage isn’t the chiefly important thing to Othello at the time and that sex will not distract him while he was away on business in Cyprus. Which is true, it’s not rational that Othello would hasten to arouse make love to his virgin wife. At the time Othello was, after all, completely devoted to her and oh so ever in love.
